Default JDM Grill is done [pics]

finally decided to do my jdm grill. out of all the time in the world, i decided to do it during my finals week cuz i dont wanna study lol

first i sanded the grill with 330 grit sandpaper. Then painted two coats of automotive black paint. Then i taped off the edges. and sprayed two coats of chrome paint. Then i took off the masking tape and alot of the black paint came off with it. pissed me off but w/e at least the chrome looks good. Ima redo the black in the summer.

Here's the pictures:

Here's a before pic:

Looks nice bro. You should check out the North East chapter (NELOC) sometime.

You could always buy a chrome grille kit if you don't wnat to paint it yourself

Looks real good. I want to do the same with my 1996 ES 300. My original grill is falling apart so I want to purchase a new one with the chrome already around the grill...

The only one that comes from the factory like that is the grille off of a '97-'99 ES (see pic from my sig below), but the physical dimensions differ for fitment with the previous gen ES, so the grille won't fit. Your best bet would probably be to follow the DIY method that maniax has explained (and it's a good one I might add)

So, i just did the jdm grill on my 95 diamond white pearl es.
I used mica black (which has little bluish pearls) flat.
And 'Chrome' paint.
I sanded everything with 1000 grit sand paper, and painted 2 coats of the mica, then tapes the sides and did three coats of chrome..
After 2 hours, i toop the tape off and i thought it was dry, but i left smudges and fingerprints all over the grille
I had to take off the rubber thingy around the edge of the grlle and retape everything to paint X_X
I kinda got tired since half the tabs on the back of the grille are broken anyways, so there are still some fingerprints from my noob work

BTW The 95-96 grills have less of a flared opening, and the little groove in the plastic that divides the chrome/paint are different b/c it doesn't go all the way around on the grill, so o well. I think it looks better on darker colored cars..I'm too used to my grille being white.
pics up in a sec..

a word of advice when painting plastic is to buy a can of adhesion/flex promoter. Helps the paint stick and lets the plastic flex ever so slightly without paint chipping off.

The grill looks really good tuan!
