Hard to replace alternator? 1994 ES300
I'm not sure if my alternator is going, but in case it is:
How much should a good one cost?
How hard would it be to install myself?
(Ability = Bolt-off, bolt -on; moderate troubleshooting; or need *very* specific manual/instructions)
How much to have it done by good mechanic? There's a non-dealer who specializes in Lexus in town.
Thanks in advance

14mm bolt, 12mm bolt, 10mm bolt. You'll want a deep well 14mm socket & a normal 12mm socket.
It's bolt on / bolt off once you get to it. When installing, get the belt on the pulley, put the 14mm bolt in enough to hold it (not fully tight), pull the alternator up pretty hefty with your wratchet on the 12mm nut & tightne it - then tighten the 14mm nut.
Really all you need to know. Nothing about it is difficult.
alternators varry depending on what kind it is.

I would look into getting a remanufactured unit. I saved about 50 bucks by buying one and it works great. should run you around 100 bucks. Make sure you get a good quality belt like a gatorback, youll expect to pay about 20 for the belt.

Swapping out the alternator is a piece of cake. If you want a little more power out of your alternator for the stereo and stuff, search around for the Highlander alternator swap. You can pick up one for cheap at the junkyard.
