Default Wheel Bearing & CV Axels - good price for repair?

I have a 1992 ES300. My mechanic says that I need the left front Wheel Bearing and both CV Axles replaced. Apparently, one CV boot is cracked and the other torn.

The price quoted was:

Wheel Bearing - $350
CV Axels - $520
Total = $870

Does this sounds like a good price? He says he is using Lexus parts.

Cool

It's Camry parts. There are no "lexus" parts.
The axles cost about $60-75usd a pop for the entire axle (inner CV, half shaft, outer CV). They're sort of a pain to change but eh. The wheel bearings are $35-50.

I can see $350 for the bearing. I can't see paying $500 for two axles. *maybe* if he was installing new motor mounts of ebay included in that $500 lol!

Especially since all the work to get the the wheel bearing is going to be done mostly just to change that axle.

Thanks for the help. Apparently, the price they quoted was with a $100 discount for doing the wheel bearing and CV at the same time.

thats way too expensive.....

i dunno about wheel bearings

but parts per axle is ~$70

a shop usually charges $140-200 per axle (part and labor)

so it should be $400 AT MOST for both sides.

I changed my own axle for a 96 camry and it cost me 70$ and about 3 hours of labor......i was a newbie techinician

I just had the CV shafts replaced in my '96, and it cost me $520 for parts and labor. The same mechanic quoted me at only 40 bucks less just to do the CV boots, so if you have a torn CV boot, it's more cost effective just to have the entire shaft replaced. That way, you're getting the torn boot fixed, and you're guaranteed that your joint isn't damaged from the previously torn boot. I live in the Minneapolis, MN area, and the two Lexus dealers quoted me at $875 and $1,100 for the CV shaft job. Needless to say, they weren't going to get my business with prices like that.

Thanks for the information. I'm in the SF Bay Area, so I'm wondering if I should expect prices to be a bit higher here in CA? I'm going to shop around, but starting to doubt I'll find a better price around here.
