Well it has over 200k Miles on it, I know the engine is bad. They were asking $1350 for it, I offered $850 they said ok. (The car is in Buffalo NY, I live in Burlington, Ontario) and was planning on getting the car towed here and the engine swapped.
Just would like opinions with ES300 owners before I complete the transaction. Does it sound like its worth it? In the end (after taxes, registration, import fees, and swap) its coming to about $2800 Canadian. Does this sound like a decent deal? What should I check out on the car (trouble spots, I guess electronically - perhaps suspension?)
I currently have a 1992 Saturn SL2 which I want to sell as soon as I get this car fixed and ready to go (well thats the plan for now anyways, unless someone can convince me otherwise)

ok, just a little more info, I am able to get an engine for it (with approx 40 - 60k km's) for about $550 Canadian, so far bringing it to $850 USD = ~ $950 Canadian +550 Engine + $100 TAX + 200 import fee at the boarder = $1800, still got to take in labour (paying my friend and I to swap engine) and then other import fees and Canadian tax should be no more than $1000 more.
Does that sound like a decent deal?

Well, your buying kind of a kit car. Very High risk, since all the pieces are used and unseen.
The condiction of the transmission, brake system, halfshaft axle CV joint shafts, steering rack and the suspension bushings are all questionable. We haven't touched on the electircal components, very high dollar.
As an upstate New York road salt auto, it's bound to be very rusted on the underside; the chassis with it.
My suggestion is to purchase a road worthy auto up front, with Canadain registry. Then you know what you're purchasing, not taking the "seller's" word of it's "next to new condiction."
It's the best way to stretch you dollar.

agree with the above statment. AFTER ALL THAT you still have a 92 car... besides if you got a JMD engine you still don't know the condition of it.... i got my 93 Es300 around the same price that you suggested(2800) with around the same mileage.. was it worth it, umm not really at first but i started loving it, driving it on long trips is the best... a really smooth car with great braking system, and a ageless look.... so it's up to you..

If the absolutely only thing wrong was the engine. For $850, it's a steal.
Now keep in mind you are betting lexus reliability on the rest of the car against the fact that it's obviously been neglected. Badly.
