I know exactly where you are talking about. My youth was spent around The Falls, Dadeland, Coconut Grove (they will nail you there along with South Beach), 77th avenue south of 104 street was a major racing route at night all the way to 152nd street. That was before Pinecrest was a city. That shopping center in South Miami has changed names so many times and rebuilt itself over and over. I remember when it used to be the Holsum bread bakery.

Those signals between the ECU and anything that wants to touch it remind me of a very sweaty tennis match.

One of the interesting things that I notice in Mexico at my track is that after a few races everyone opens their hood sprays a little water and checks mechanical settings. A lot of the racers have the $$$ and even the standalone units, but I rarely see them touching them after cursing track times. I even bought a small weather station to measure air pressure, humidity, temperature.

However, when I have visited tracks in the U.S....jesus my times sucked...let me play with the computer and see if I can fix it. And then I watch them hit the same or worse times.

I never put an ECU in or any of the systems mentioned by Pheonix.

When I get around to rigging up that turbo in my RX300, then I will do something like that, but in my first stage of my own turbo plan it is going to be largely mechanical and low boost.

The answer is it depends.

What would I want out of one (and this is me)...25 hp, under $1000 USD, but even then I am living in fantasy land.

Yeah I'd say depends on the Tuning.
It will vary upon what other bolt ons you have.

Cool

Around 10 horsepower. Maybe a few more if you can afford to squeak in more ignition timing advance (Not something that's going to be conistantly achiveable on the 1mz's). Anytime you get one where you can feed more ignition advance, it doesn't create much extra horsepower, as much as throttle responce picks up, and the powerband itself is shifted downward slightly.

As a *real* mod list grows, the ECU will not supply enough fuel on the mid-top end (depending). At which point it's not so much gaining power by giving more fuel, it's simply making use of the power potential of the mods.

The perfect example is headwork & cams. Sure... you can make some great gains, but they're inconsistant because the stock ECU is never going to be expecting how much extra fuel it really needs to throw in, hence, they always run lean. eh well.

My cousin that has the Golf VR6 has a Sportchip in his vehicle. GIAC is bigger for the VWs, but that was the mod he wanted. Only thing I can tell is that the shifts were smoother, supposedly he can go beyond the speed limiter and maybe he got a few more horses. The guy at the place claimed 10% more hp, but 18 horses seems a big stretch. The guy who sells the GIAC chips claims similar B.S.

I have not found any such chips for ES or RX.

BTW, we have on the table for him a Dieselgeek Short Shift and a Clutch Kit (have not decided which one), but he did not want the Shrick Cams.

No, that's just what happens as you really pile mods on.
Expect about 10 horsepower just from leaning a stock engine. They run too rich from the factory. There's a good bit of stuff you can do too.

On my 99 RX (a 1MZFE engine), I have an Underdog Racing Development lightweight crankshaft pulley. URD is no longer making them though some Solara owners are trying to get them to do it again. Several of us RX300 owners have them, including also TunedRX300 who originally discovered the pulley.

The only other one I have heard about is a from a group called Sportivo Concepts, but their webpage is not up yet. That pulley was supposed to be a 3 pulley set.

I have not seen anything for later editions of the ES or RX motor, might be too soon for development.
