![Question](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I have a ES330 - Is there a vast difference between using Mobil 1 synthetic oil 5W-30 Vs. 10W-30 ? Would using the 10W-30 which has higher viscosity damage the engine in the long run ? Would it impact gas mileage ? Would the engine work harder ?

Either one would be acceptable as long as it says so in the owner's manual. Sure the 5W would supposedly get better gas mileage, but the difference is negligible. The engine would start easier with 5W since its a bit thinner yet would work fine for most conditions. If you want 10W would be thicker and provide better protection during the summer heat. You really wouldn't be able to feel the difference in driveability either way. And thicker oil certainly wouldn't "damage" the engine.......the BMW M3 uses special 20W-60 oil!

5w-30 is easier to pump cold, while not being signifigantly different hot over it's functional lifespan.
This is why 5w-30 is the preffered oil, and 10w-30 is not.
I'd use 5w-30 simply because it's that little bit more easier to pump before the engine is up to temp. Which is most likely while Everyone has gone to 52-20, and 5w-30 oils in the first place. Most wear occures before the engine is warm.
