My dad and I test drove BOTH the Acura TL and Lexus ES300 in early 1999 and as far as comfort, ride, quietness, acceleration and solid build, the Lexus in BOTH our opinions clearly won....hands down! Maybe in 1997, the cars were different but I seriously doubt it. My dad and I thought the ride and the way the Acura TL handled road imprefections was way inferior to the Lexus. I would recommend the ES300 over the Acura TL any day of the week!

I am new to this forum, but as an owner of BOTH a 2001 Lexus ES300 Coach and a 2000 Acura TL I have a unique perspective. ( I realize you were talking about the first gen TL)

The Acura advantages are more powerfu engine, five speed trans (which lowers rpms sig at highway speeds) more powerful braking, and better handling. The Lexus definitly rides quieter, has MUCH better quality appointments such as better leather seats, switches and real wood. Both are put together very well.

The Acura cost approx. 5K less than my Lexus (and the Acura has the DVD Navi) so I would expect the Lexus to have finer appointments.

The Acura is my primary car. When I was looking for cars I really wanted the Lexus but even with a bit of a deal, the 2000 Lexus ES300 was 3K more than the TL (with Navi). I could not justify the difference.

When it came time for my wife to get a new car, she really wanted the Lexus. It was the end of the 2001 Model year and the 2002 Lexus was on the way. The dealership was more willing to deal and we were able to make the deal. The ES300 was only about 1K more than the Acura. We have since gone back to the dealership to see the new ES300. My wife does not like it at all!

When I drive the Lexus I feel it is more luxurious and quiet than the Acura. I can really tell that the Acura was built to a much lower price point. I am not disappointed with the Acura and do not regret my decision (especially since I can drive the Lexus on the weekends!)

My Acura is diamond white pearl, the Lexus is Oyster Pearl. Both have beige leather interior. If anyone had specific questions about the similarities/differences, I will be happy to give my opinion. I don't have a bone to pick with either car.
