Best oil...

I use castrol magnatec.. 10 - 40w
it is normal oil mixed with tiny silicone beads. It is a bit expensive but is a very good oil that protects. Not sure if they call it magnatec in the US though.. you should be able to get the same sort of oil. The more expensive the better quality.
Older cars do require a higher grade but 127,000 isnt that high for your size engine. Just need to chabge it more reguarly
I dont find synthetic a problem... most performance cars that run on 5 - 40w is synthetic anyway, such as ferrari etc.

VW uses the 5w40 synthetic oil, sourced by Castrol (Syntec). Too much silicone can be detrimental to the engine. Silicone destroys O2 sensors. When you get your engine oil tested for contaminents, silicones are considered one (in excess amounts)
Syntec 5w40 is not available off the shelf, only 5w50 in the States. Texaco, I believe also market a 5w40 synthetic oil.
Just use whatever conventional oil you're using. Using synthetic (used after 65,000 in my car), it leaks like crazy (slow engine oil leaks). It may very well not happen to you. Although I lose 1 qt every 3000 miles anyway
