Idle too high at start-up 92ES300
My 92 ES300 will idle way too high at start-up,
approx 1200rpm, then after about a minute or two
it will settle down, the colder it is the longer
it takes to slow down. Found no vacuum line problems are anything disconnected. Any help
appreciated!!

it's fine. It does that for:
-to get the oil pump moving for a more thorough oil circulation than the oil pump operating at 700 rpm idle
-get the cat converter warmed up asap for improved emissions.
then the car won't shift into OD for the same thing, warming up the cat for improved emissions.
It's no big deal

Idle too high, this is not normal!!
I have to wait at least 2 to 3 minutes to put
car in gear. This thing is idleing at 1500rpm
checked today, don't think putting in gear at that
rpm is good practice. No, this is not normal, car
takes way too long to idle down, even when warm.
Now what???

It's perfectly fine. The VZ series engines do not have an external idle adjustment. It's within the ECU.
Like earlier, it's done for emissions and oil circulation. If your car was idling over 2000 rpm, yes, I would be concerned.
If you want take it to the dealership (or mechanic), and the Lexus service dept will charge $70 for diagnostic (depend if the tech does a half-*** job), it may not tell you anything (basically he'll be pulling an engine code)

I drive a '91 Lexus es 250...and ever since i got it two years ago....the engine revs up to 2000 RPM's when it is first cranked up after sitting in the morning.......it revs to less thatn 1000 later in the day after it has been driven....it takes about 5 or 6 minutes for it to go down to about 800 RPM''s....is this normal???

this is normal.. no need to worry.. mine will be at 2000 rpm on a cold morning... it varies from day to day... warm mornings it will be on 1800 or higher on cold mornings. Then drops down gradually to 800 after 10 mins.

I think today is the "coldest" day since I drive my Lexus.. the RPMs went to 2,500 for about 4 minutes, then I drove off and everything was fine. NIce warm air...

I agree with everyone else. Every car I think has this feature. Its just that some cars take longer then others. Remember even though that we might have the same make and models doesnt mean that we are going to take the same exact time to heat up or have the same RPM revs. Every car is uniqye from the way it is dirven to the way that it was broken in to the way that you have maintaned it. So if yours takes a little longer then say a buddies then it should be normal. As long as the RPM's arent like over 2100 or so then you shouldnt have anything to worry about.

Semicon,
Is right on the money, It is normal for your car to do that and every one elses is diffrent. Mine will idle at 2k for 2 minutes and drop when the cats and O2 are warmed up and operating efficiently.
