I have the same problem with my 96 es300.
I was just coming to post about it, I think my problem is cold starts.
When I got my car a few months ago, it had a dead battery. When you have a dead battery, your engine will make a click click click click sound.
This is different. My car will not even turn over. It will take 3 or 4 turns of the key before it will turn over and actually attempt to start.
This problem is annoying and frightning. It doesnt happen all the time, but I happened to notice the other night it would not turn over.
I belive my problem is related to a cold engine and possibly yours as well. Im not sure if being low on gas is also releated, by I have a suspicion it may in some respect.
The problem I have with my engine not starting when its cold, is that I live in northern california. It may be mid 40s or so which is cold, but its not 20degrees cold. Im afraid if it gets much colder like going into feburary I may not be able to start my engine at all.
Does anyone have suggestions for some engine treatment or something that may help this problem?

Could be the cam lock. I have a 94 and when i first bought it, i had to turn the key several times to finally get the engine to start, i would also pump the gas pedal a couple times to feed some gas into the engine, not too much tho so i wouldnt flood it. but i went and got the cam lock replaced, it cost somewhere between $75 - $100, and now the car starts perfect on the first try every time

Just to add an update, my car will start not start straight up while just turning the key.
By chance I noticed, if I slightly gas it while starting it fires up immediately.
Now my questions are, can anyone help me to further diagnos this problem from having to gass while turning the key... and secondly...... Am I killing my engine? I dont want to prematurely ruin it any more or mess things up worst than they are. Is gassing while starting bad? I try to very lightly tap it so it doesnt go crazy with the RPMs, but are there negative side affects to doing this? I know for a fact its not good to rev a cold engine alot, [or at least someone that was mechanicly inlcined mentioned that once] but what about what im doing?
Oh on a sidenote to this, I am using 87/89 octane in my 96 es300. Could that be contributing to the problem? I plan to start using premium again when I get low, to do the mpg test.
Any reflections are welcomed.
thanks
