I looked at my 98 ES300 yesterday, behind the gas pedal carpet and found nothing at all. There was a white big plastic cover to the right of the gas pedal which was sitting vertically to cover the center console.
Can anyone who has a 98 ES300 and found the location of the A/C filter, take some digital picture(s) and post it in this thread to show other owners ???
Thanks,
Ching-Ho Cheng

Thanks for the link to the pictures of the location of the A/C filter. However, all the pictures in that link are no longer accessible. Maybe, we have to email the owner of that post and ask him to repost all the pictures.

I put in the $50 A/C filter yesterday.
After removing the white plastic panel, (2 circular clips on the side near the seat), there was a white vertical cover located very close to the gas pedal. This vertical cover was hinged in the bottom and locked in postion by 2 clips on the top.
The filter element consisted of 2 pieces called up and down. I was surprised that my car had NO filter in that slot at all. I could find dirt and leaves inside. I cleaned up the slot and then inserted the up filter : insert and push down a bit before push the filter up. It locked in place when pushed up all the way. Then I inserted the down filter and then put back the vertical cover, the white plastic panel, and then the carpet. The whole procedure was not too bad but not much room to get into there and move thing around.

lcc014,
do you notice any difference with the filter in? For example, can you still smell the exhaust of a crappy car in front you? Does the car have a cleaner smell overall after installing the filter? One more thing, where did you purchase the filters from?
Thanks,
Nix

I did the filter last night and didn't noticed any smell difference. However, the air flow felt a little bit restricted. Need to turn up the fan speed a bit. The filter box did mentioned about the deodorizing. It may takes sometimes to work, I don't know. Time will tell....
I got the filter from dealer and that's why it costed so much !!!

Location of the A/C filter in my '01 ES is underneath the carpeting on the right-hand side of the gas pedal. There are actually (2) A/C filters (upper and lower), and I believe they are OEM Toyota Denso parts. I couldn't believe how dirty these filters are! You can see them in the pics attached. I don't think these filters have seen the light of day since coming from the factory. Given the circumstances, I just cleaned them really good and reinstalled them back to the filter slots, which proved to be a somewhat harder task than removing them. I will purchase new A/C filters, either from Toyota or Lexus, and replace the old ones at a later time.
Here's a picture of the lower (thicker) filter. Note the small leaves, dirt and billions of dust particles caked within the pleats of the filter...
