Well when I was looking for a door part on the lexus parts website I ran across an interesting part that I thought would fix my gas door, so I ordered it and sure enough it was right!
I have been opening my gas door from the trunk latch for about 4yrs now because the lexus dealership told me it would cost about $200 to fix.
I'm so excited I can open my gas lid from the inside button now...
Here is the part# 77360-33020 ($3.23)

Here is the new part compared to the broken one:

Broken part removal: (Very easy just turn the gas door and pop the clip)

What's real sad is 5yrs ago when my car was under warranty I had the same problem and the dealership had my car for 5 days and told me they had to replace the whole mechanism. They even gave me a loaner car and when I signed the warranty repair papers and the cost was in the $200 range plus rental fees!

It is amazing how one little clip can make you feel 100% better at the gas pump. I had the same problem with my Honda a few years back. I had to prop a writing pen under the gas door release lever and then slide my key in between the gas door and the body panel to pry it open every time I had to fill up.
Enjoy cabin button popping fun at the pump from now on.

You have to realize that you work on cars for a living and most the rest of us do not. It is more of a hobby. What may seem like common sense to you (meager) is not the same for another.
