My car won't shift to overdrive until I drive it for a minute or two. It's been about 20-35 degrees in the morning is this normal?

It is between 7-12 degrees outside at 8:30pm when I get off of work. I let the engine idle for about 45 seconds until I cannot wait any longer and drive off. I also click the heated seat on high. By the time my **** is hot and I have to click the heat to low on the seat, It is about 4 minutes.
That is when my rpms drop down and the car shifts into a higher gear.
Cold weather my friend. IT SUCKS!

One cool feature I recently noticed is the automatic climate control with cold weather... if it's a cold start and you have it in "AUTO" mode, it won't turn it on until the engine's at least partway warmed up.

Few automatics with electrnically controlled shift solenoids will shift into O/D when very cold.
One you get into OBD-II cars (For us '94+) most won't shift into overdrive gears until transmission fluid reads 150*F or greater.

No not jolt as far as I know. But I was just reading and it is infact a feature not to shift to overdrive until warm. It's to protect the tranny for lubrication reasons!

Normal. My transmission won't do anything more than 2nd gear until the temp needle passes the bottom tick. Then there's another short while before it'll go into OD. Really annoying if you ask me.........you're quite limited on speed unless you push it to high rpms, which is bad.

Not really i mean i'm driving normal speed maybe going about 40-60 when i get the hard shift. It normaly is when it is real cold out but happens sometime when it is warm out just not as violent of a jolt.

^ Yall wilnotice that until the outlet coolant temp registers 170*F, the engine will bog massively around 4000rpm.
That's because the ECU is putting your ignition timing all the way back to base timing. Makes it hard for the engine to accellerate - so it doesn't.
