Exclamation Mechanic Pricing (Dont pay too much!)

Hey Everyone!!!

I wanted to make this post cause I think we could ask one another a resonable price for work on their car so we know if were getting screwed or not, or atleast make us question the work performed by our mecanic!

Estimate :
-ALL motor mount replacement
-Trans mounts replacement
-Solder the Y pipe that cracked off manifolds as result of engine movement in compartment
-New front ceramic brakes.
Parts + Labor = $560.00ish

IS THIS REASONABLE? I LOOKED UP MOTOR MOUNTS AND THERE LIKE 20 BUCKS EACH? WHY IS THE PRICE OF LABOR SO HIGH?

Are you replacing the rotors and calipers as well?

Get a breakdown of the parts & labor for each of these repairs. This is the only way to tell whether you're getting a decent deal.

I am thinking that you might have to jack up the motor from the frame itself to install the mounts.

the majority of the cost for motor mounts isnt the part pricing, but the actual labor and install.
i have a friend/mechanic do most of my work and it saves me a couple 100 every now and again.
have had the rear main seal, and both valve cover gaskets replaced, as well rt axle shaft, cost me around 500 for all. if i were to have gone to lexus, they would have easily run me 800 plus for that work due to having to drop the tranny. all other REGULAR DIY work i tend to attempt on my own with the wonderful help and write up of DIYers on this site.

So far I have had to pay for brand new rotors & pads front and back, radiator flushed and refilled w/ a new cap, brakes bled and refilled, 2 alignments and a set of tires since I bought my 92 back in September.

This year I plan to replace my valve cover gaskets front and back, distributor o-ring, new belts/plugs/wires, flush & change all fluids that I haven't yet (clutch/transaxle/powersteering), recharge a/c, new shocks/springs (lowered), set of 18" rims, new headlights, and a full paint job. I paid 3500$ for the car itself, and by years end will have probably put about as much or more in to it. But its a great car, still in great shape and once everything is fixed/replaced I couldn't think of anything I would rather drive.

Well when I owned my '01 ES before it was totaled last year, I had kept a running Excel spreadsheet of all the expenses I poured into the car (including maintenance, non-maintenance and mods, see attached file). After going through the grand total, I couldn't believe before my eyes that I spent just over $5,100 out of my pocket in service and mod expenses during my 3 years of ownership. That goes to show you what true car ownership and being an enthusiast really means

I don't think the price isn't that bad at all, since the rear motor mount is a PIA to replace (you have to pull out the driverside axle), the rest is not too hard.

Are the parts OEM?
Because the rear OEM motor mount is over $100 by it self (if I could recall).

Currently at $6,800 for my Lexus but this is for 10 years of ownership.
Seems cheap compared to my $17K maintenance costs for my Mercedes.

well, we've had our es250 for just over a month now. it needed an engine. we kinda knew that when we bought it, and we had the engine so that doesn't count.

280/parts for various replacement engine and trans gaskets and seals
180/part for rack, which was leaky

now needs full suspension job which we will pull off for about 800/parts

labor? bah. we only spent like 25k on tools, and all kinds of time and energy and about 500 in test fees for husband to get through the ase master stuff. so yeah. :P

My mechanic is my next door neighbor - I only get charged cost of parts (I get his labor for free). When my car goes in for service that day, we swap cars....he takes mine in the morning to his shop and I take his to work. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

most mechanics use a book to determine how much they charge in labor. getting a printout of that would make it easier to figure out roundabout how much you'd get charged. They also usually add a percentage on top of parts cost as well.

The best thing to do is get a list of all the places you'd have your car fixed, and call and ask each one of them what their labor rate is per hour. This varies alot.
