Disconnecting the battery
When I disconnect the negative cable from the battery to do maintaince, do I need to worry about my stock stereo system locking up (anti-theft system)or the airbag being disabled? This warning is what I read about in the Haynes manual for 92-96 Camry/Avalon. I have a 1995 ES300. It says you may need an activation code for the stereo before disconnecting the battery or if the airbag light comes on after reconnecting the battery, you'll have to bring it into the dealer.
Thanks for any tips. This forum has been very helpful.

I never had any problems after disconnecting the battery on my '94 ES300.
In fact, when I replaced the battery on this car, the only thing that had to be reset was the clock and the preset radio stations....no radio code was neccessary for activation. The '94 & '95 ES's are the same in this respect.

The Haynes Repair Manual is only For Toyota branded models, NOT Lexus! Therefore only certain repairs apply to the Lexus. You need to have the Lexus repair manual to read the actual repair procedure, which is as I said in the above post that there should be NO problems in disconnecting the battery!

I didn't say you were wrong, all I said was ALL haynes manuals say that disconnecting the battery may disable the airbags or reset your radio, if you've read more than one haynes shop manual you would know that

during a 10-15mins or less time period. you should be fine.
i believe that if you do go over you must input the anti theft code for the radio.
correct me if i'm wrong? because i've run into trouble with the codes ( did not have the code for it)so i replace it with an Eclipse radio.

I've had to re-enter my code on numerous occasions. Luckily I got the code from the previous owner of the car. I was a little nervous about disconnecting the battery the first time though, in case the code I was given wouldn't work....but.....thankfully it did.

The code for the radio is preset by the owner only, not the factory. So if you never program a code (or one hasnt been set by anybody else) The radio will work. Its explained in the owners manual with more detail.. When you reconnect the battery and a code is programmed it will say "SEC" when you hit the power button. If you dont know if a code has been programmed by previous owner or whatever, turn the key to the ACC position and watch the display. If it says "SEC" for a second then goes out, a code is programmed into the radio and you will need it so dont disconnect power or youre screwed. Youre allowed 9 tries to enter the code after reconnecting battery power, after that it will say "HELP" and youre pretty much done

When you turn the key from "LOCK" to "ACC" it will do one of two things, turn on if it was previously on or do nothing if it was off. If a code is programmed, it will say "SEC" for a second then turn on if it was on or the "SEC" will go out and the radio will stay off if you had it off. And yes im positive
