Does anyone know why is it necessary to have a dealer install a new dvd? In my case, installing a 4.2 in place of a 4.1. Thanks for any input.

I just bought a 2002 ES300. I had a repair shop friend of mine purchase the upgrade from a Lexus dealership(discounted to them) and it was a few months old so was cheaper. Went from 1.1 to 5.1; they are specific to model year. All I had to do was take old DVD out of Nav system player(mine is in the trunk) and put in the new one. Nav console took me through the steps with no problem.

Thanks for the input. I thought it ought to be that simple. The Lexus site FAQ indicated that it should be done by a dealer and made me concerned that sonething more was involved. I am glad to hear that you were able to install a 5.1 version. I just bought a 4.2 version on the internet for about $20, including shipping.
