I just took my car for the 60K service yesterday. Everything checked out ok besides needing a new A/C filter, and some tire wear notice. I was then told that my brakes were missing 'shims'. I dont know much about mechanics or parts, but what exactly are the shims for and was it dangerous to be driving without them? Do they tend to fall out or was it something the previous person forgot to put on or back on when I last did my brake job?
Sorry for such a silly question, but I know you guys know whats up with anything Lexus, as silly as it may be.
Thanks!

Brake shims were designed to alleviate the squeaky noise that can arise under low speed and light braking. These shims are made of high strength steel plate and coated with high temperature silicon rubber and have proven to effectively eliminate or substantially reduce noise in addition to shielding heat transfer to the caliper.

And that's exactly what they did. We've been noticing some noise on the brakes for about a month or so before. I was a bit puzzled as my brakes were done fairly recently. You have just put it all together. Thanks so much for your help... hopefully it helps someone else, just like alot of topics here have for me.
