I have a friend (girl) who's been complaining to me about her steering wheel squeaking every time she makes any sort of turn. It's coming straight from the where the steering wheel meets the column. She's had the dealer fix this problem 5 times I've been told. Now it's out of warranty and the dealership said you have to pay for repairing(lube) it now. I've done a search and have noticed it's a pretty common problem.
I was wondering if anyone has made a DIY tutorial on how to lube it myself? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Patrick

The squeaking is the clock spring at the top of the column. That i basically a cable which holds the air bag wire so when you turn the wheel the wire moves too. A dealer or qualified shop has to fix it. A lot of Camrys and ES 300s do that as you said.

I have had this 'squeak' thing as well on the same model 2002 es300. We call it the puppy under the hood. The girl at lexus told me that its some control ball thing in the steering or something (dont really recall her description) but that it would cost $379 to fix.
Doesnt do it all the time, depending on the steer.
If there is a quick fix or a cheaper way to do it, im all ears. If not, i'll live with it.

Are you sure it's a faulty "clock spring"? My friend said they the Lexus dealership told her that something just needing lubing and they did it out of courtesy the last time she had it service. But after a few weeks, the squeak came back again.
At any rate, I'll pass this "clock spring" information to her. Thanks
