Once the car has turned on the procedure calls for the parking brake to be on so when you put your vehicle in Drive the Parking Brake should "hold" the vehicle in place and your vehicle should eventually adjust the idle so the RPMs are back to normal. Hope this helps.
Done this when I replaced my starter in the past before.

I must advise that the battery has been out for longer then 1 week. One new alternator and battery later, the check engine code I was getting for can shaft sensor bank 1 has not come back. Vehicle also idles at 1000rpm at start up then after warming up idles down to near 450 and sits without stalling. Over 200k on vehicle.
!!!!UPDATE!!!!
Reason its sitting at 450rpm w/o stalling is b.c of the altitude here just needed to drive it around to reset idle. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE LINK AN ADJUSTMENT FOR MY TP SENSOR!!! Its a 4 pin sensor, need to adjust to put back in place to remove p0122 code.

Works on toyotas and Lexus from 2003ish-present.
I drive 2003 Lexus ES 300
Step 1: turn key all the way forward without starting car twice.
Step 2: turn car on
(To be clear in step 1 & 2) turn forward, turn back, turn forward, turn back, turn car on.
Step 3: put car in drive.
Step 4: push down the emergency brake
Step 5: leave car in drive, release your foot break and wait.
Mine took a little over 5 minutes suddlenly idle was relearned.

I had that IDENTICAL problem with my 2002 es when i first purchased it used... It got to the point where it was in the shop for almost 3 weeks and no one could figure out what was wrong with it. I had like 5 mechanics look at it. and afterwards finally Lexus had it fixed. $1100 later. But that was a year ago and now it's running smooth!

Low idle problems too
Gustavo87: i’m having the same problems with the low idle. My car was working just fine, but recently my battery went dead. I took the battery to AutoZone. They diagnosed it as a good battery checked the alternator and that was the problem (by the way, that was an original alternator it lasted 21 years) after replacing the alternator with one from Napa Auto parts I turned the car on, and the idle is running really low 😞. I am definitely going to try your technique. I’ll let you guys know if that works.
