ours has the directional rims too. whoever put the new tires on it recently screwed up the glaringly obvious R and L and switched sides on the rear.

engine and trans are out of the ES now... pictures tomorrow when my head isn't pounding. exactly like the camry, husband took to it like a fish to water. about 3 hours start to finish.

here are the pics. the camry should come out much cleaner since it doesn't leak anything. the contents of the ES were a right mess, oil all over the place and stuff.

first few things out of the way

shot of the engine in there

hooking up the cherry picker

and it's outta there

engine compartment pretty much empty

engine and trans in their current resting place

it runs!!!

sorry for the lack of updates. i'm super busy right now so when i have some time (next week?) i will post pictures.

the engine sounds great, it runs really well, but that knock sensor is kicking a CEL. must not like the place it's sitting, the camry block didn't have the port for it. [shrug]

here's an abbreviated overview of the rest of the process:

camry with engine.

camry and engine, separated.

recipient, donor, and engine in question.

engines side by side, after swapping wiring harnesses, intake manifolds and front valve covers- the one on the left is the bad one.

engine dropping in

engine hanging by a couple motor mounts and the bar

enter the transmission

ready for the first drive

whew!!! got all that and cleanup done just in time to walk out the door on vacation.

and the cause of the knock in the old engine: a rod bearing. the thing was toast anyway, the block was a real mess. he saved the heads, and the rod bearing for amusement value of course.

needs some suspension work and a couple other minor things, but otherwise it runs really well

I'm in complete awe of your ability to do this and make it happen.

Nice pics and work!

Very nice work indeed. Next time make it a 3VZ-FE into a 91 Camry with a detailed DIY so I won't have to

thanks folks

i think this is the last "next time" we'll do for quite some time!

the engine itself just had about $1200 in parts and 40ish hours of labor stuck into it when the camry got hit. that was the t belt, cam seals, crank seal, water pump, t belt cover seal (i think?), tstat, valve cover gaskets, stuff like that. basically any and all maintenance items short of the rear main, which is a real PITA- that was done with the engine out.

finally got back from vacation and got a chance to really drive the car. it needs suspension work. badly.

so we will be replacing struts, springs, mounts, basically the whole thing. found some gabriel struts on ebay for cheap, springs at the local auto parts shop, and the rest is coming from the 'yota dealer at employee discount. still adds up to 800. grrr.

ehh, id pass on the Gabriel struts.

do you have the sealed or serviceable struts? if serviceable then Tokiko and Bilstein make some good ones and if sealed id go with KYB.

(im going with KYBs on my 90 V6 camry)

did you stick with the auto trans? the E56 5spd swap is massively tempting me
