Default 3VZFE JDM swap

Well I located a JDM 3VZ today for $640 and change... Tomorrow I'm gonna tear it down and re-gasket it thanks to Yoji I still have most of a gasket set... I probably should do the head gaskets since I have them, and its a lot easier to do out of the car... oh anybody have any input on doing the job without R&Ring the eng and trans axle as a unit? In other words can the trans stay in the car?

Swifty562 is the man to check with. He's well into, or possibly finished with, the swap and his thread about it (sticky-worthy) is here.

Thanks for the reply... I checked out swifty's post but he did'nt specify if he removed the eng and trans as a unit... so far I have'nt had a problem... I was worried about the rear mount getting in the way but if you remove all the bolts it moves enough to get out and in... one thing I figured out is if you remove the upper manifold off the jdm and suspend the eng from the 2 outer intake manifold studs it hangs level from side to side although I may have to use the front engine hanger in a 3 point suspension with a second chain to twist the motor into the motor mounts... the original engine hangers are designed for the trans to be attached for it to hang level... as I couple the trans and motor mounts the wiring loom and steering hose can be easily lifted lifted out of the way of the egr pipe... the intake can be assembled in the car after everything else is done... sounds like a plan right? let you all know more soon but first I have to finish swapping the pan, exaust manifolds, timing belt, w-pump,thermostat, idler, tensioner, front and rear main seals...

i did remove the motor and tranny as one. i bought a 2ft..thick of the thickest chain.

then connect both ends to each engine hanger... and place the middle of the chain on the cherry picker... so it looks like an upside down V from the side view of the car.

Well the answer is yes it can be done without removing the trans... the trick is to chain to the outer studs on the lower intake with 2 feet of chain and use a motorcycle tie-down as a secondary support from the cherry picker hook to the outer front exaust studs (manifold off) that way you can roll the engine as needed by adjusting the tiedown... BTW this will work on both automatic and manual transmissions...

I removed the engine with thick rope, like the one from rock climbing. I left the transmission in. Basically did it the same way like swifty, only using rope instead of chains.

Yes it runs great... I only had one problem and that was the Power Steering hose where it connects to the hyd fan the hose had a crack and was leaking probably from man handling it, but it was a easy fix... I had the hose that came with the jdm exept they cut it off the pump... I cut the steel line about a inch behind the bend where the line mounts to the head and did the same to the existing line without taking it off the car and used a heavy duty compression connector for a 10mm line from "The Hose Man"... The cost was 9.00 bucks and 15 minutes to do...
