The "big plastic box" is part of the stock intake and is restrictive, which is way I'm looking to finish the intake with a better flowing y-pipe.

99-01 have a dual throttle body, which makes finding an aftermarket intake impossible. Our only route is to go custom.

I would play with the exhaust first, y-pipe and direct flow muffler. Intakes need to be really designed well to be effective. Those of you above who have managed to take air from the front of their vehicle are on the right path, and that is about as good as you can get without forced induction...and there is a big gap between the two.

That's a good start. One thing I used to do on mine, but have of course experimented over the years, is take a cooking pot and make a heat shield out of it to go over the filter.
