2000 ES 300 high idle
This car has 73000 miles on it and when started cold, it idles at 1700 or so rpms. After a few minutes, it works its way down to about 1000 rpms. In gear (automatic) its at about 800 rpm.
What is the likely cause of this? I checked for vacuum leaks by inspecting hoses, and found nothing.
Any input is appreciated.

That is normal my 1996 ES300 does and so did my 92 ES300 before it got totaled thats the way the engine is designed to idle high before it warms up and the it idles normal after it warms up.

Are you sure its supposed to be that high? Ideling at 800-900 seems too high. It seeems to stress the transmission every time you shift it in and out of gear.
Thanks

crankin, how long has your vehicle been doing this?
When this kind of issue happens to me, I usually disconnect the negative battery cable for a bit (works better than the EFI fuse trick I talk about in the RX300 forum) to get things back to normal. If not, something else is at play.

Anything under 2000 RPM is fine when starting cold. Theyre supposed to do that. It just does thattohelplighting off the cat and getting the 02 sensors online quickly. A vacuum leak will make the idle rough or bounce up and down. Spec is 750 RPM w/ an automatic.

It's been doing it since we bought it 3 weeks ago. What concerns me most is the shock that it puts on transmission components when shifted in and out of gear.
What does the battery disconnect trick do?

i have a 2000 ES as well, this morning I turned it on and the highest idle i got was 1300rpm....Dont know why yours is so high.
Though I don't think 300 rpms higher is a big deal...
Have you recently serviced the car?

The key thing is that as long as when you driving and are at a stoplight or idle in D, your RPMS should be at least under 1000 RPM, preferably around 750.
BTW, I am also a Floridian
