Interesting response to a similar problem in this thread.
Even more interesting are the numerous negative ideas about capacitors, which I've never read before amongst a group of auto-audiophiles.
(Note that they tend to get a little riled up a little more quickly than blokes on this board. Got much love for our "Kanmuri" cousins though.)
Anyway there's a good resource site link in the first response that you might check out, and the "Big 3" upgrades are never a bad idea.

i dont think you need a cap for 500rms. it would help the light dimming but not necessary imo. i have 1 12' type R thats 500 rms and 1500 max, yes the lights dim but dont see spending $150+ for a cap for a mediocre powered system. oh yeah my alternator is running strong after 11+ yrs
