Errr...
When idling and the car is fully warmed up, RPM's should be about 7500 RPMs (you need to multiply the #'s in the dash by 1000)
When you are driving, the transmission changes gears, and thats why at 4000 rpm, the needle 'drops'

What? That doesn't make any sense to me at all.. I'm going to assume that by saying 4 rpm, you mean 4000rpm. What exactly does the rpm needle go back to, or are you refering to your car when you say "it" the first time and the rpm needle the second time?
I don't exactly understand what the problem is.. are you having a rough idle and it's smooth after you rev to 4000rpm?

If I'm not mistaken, lexusxrcr was asking if the tach needle sitting above "0" RPMs when the car is stationary is normal or whether there is something wrong with his car or his tachometer. It seems that he mistakenly figures it should be like the speedometer needle and rest at 0 RPMs when the car is running but not moving. I *think* he means that when he presses on the gas pedal (while the car is stationary) the tach needle will go up to 4000 RPMs (for instance) and will then drop back down to 1000 RPMs but won't go all the way down to 0 RPMs like he figures it should.
lexusxrcr, correct me if I'm wrong.

yeah tahs what i mean. when im driving , and at a red light or stop sign at a complete stop, it goes back to 1 or 1.5 rpm instead of 0. and it shifts gears when it goes up to 4. any problem with it starting with 1 or 1.5 instead of 0?

HAHAHAHAH!!
First off, I don't believe you lexusxrcr, because you said it "changes gear" at 4000rpm. How would you know that, if you didn't know what the rpm gauge measures?

I actually think there are more people who know about cars changing gears than what the rpm meter is for. Before driving, people are passengers and can feel when the car shifts. Either way, now he knows that the car idles at ~750rpm normally.
