Heavy Steering
Hi I am new to Club Lexus, and have a question about my 93 ES 300. The steering is much heavier then the 95 Camry 5spd. The power steering pump is not leaking, or making any funny noises to make me think it is not working properly. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Here are some related threads that I found that you might check out (maybe you already have):

These threads discuss steering effort. The consensus seems to be that heavy effort is possibly the result of obvious/non-obvious malfunctions, low fluid, etc., and the typical light effort is the non-optimal, intended Lexus engineered "feature" of this entry-level luxury vehicle.

thanx for the help guys Im thinking it might be my steering rack or the fact that my front struts need to be replaced. I hoping its not the rack because they are expensive but my dad can replace it for me so atleast I will save on labor.

After a turn, does it return properly or poorly? Low tire pressure, which I'm sure you've checked or front end allignment could cause this.
Also, what were you driving before? I'm new to Lexus, but I don't expect my es300 to steer like a sports car.
With no noise, the belt and pump must be okay. If air pressure is right, then a suspension check and alignment is called for.
Most vehicles have a torque value for the amount of effort it takes to turn the steering wheel. It should not cost much to have that checked at a shop. At least then you would have a feel for how far off it is

I ordered new struts and mounts today and I am getting an alignment as soon as I get those so hopefully that fixes it. Before the ES I had a 95 Camry 4cyl 5spd a 90 Supra Turbo 5spd and AE86 with the sohc(the slowest thing I have ever driven lol) but it was really reliable though.

Please give us feedback when its done. There are so many times that I know the problem will be mine one day, so I follow the thread for knowledge and then never find out what the cure was. (sigh)
Thanks
