Last night I wasn't able to get my 2002 ES300 into 'D'. Yes, the shifter was in 'D', but the indicator in the dash lit '4'. Also, the engine speed was 3000rpm @ ~63mph, same as when in 4th. Moving the shifter between '4' and 'D' had no effect.
So, I took it in to the Lexus dealer today, and I'm quoted $560 to replace the "shift lock unit" (electrical part, not mechanical).
Anyone else seen this problem? Is it common? Any ideas what causes it? Does the cost seem right?

I suggest you do a search at this site and see if anyone with any model has had the same problem. Did the dealer tell you the parts and labor costs? Sometimes the part is so deep that it takes a lot of time to get to it and that jacks the price up. If you have TNT, you can save some $$$.

The button overrides the shift lock. Shift lock being the mechanism that forces you to press the brake pedal to get the shifter out of Park. This allows you to get the car out of Park even if the shift lock mechanism is broken.
Looking at the dealer invoice, they charged for for one hour of diagnostic, two hours of work at a total of $205, and $335 for the replaced part. The replaced part looks like the shift lever itself and the plastic housing that it sits in. If you pop open the cover between the ashtray and the arm rest you can see it.
