family just purchased a 2002 es 300 (third lexus in last 6 years). less than 200 miles on odometer. car must be driven to ft. myers beach florida on wednesday. must new car break-in (vary speed, max 55mph) rules be observed religiously?

Just vary your rpms and avoid cruising at the same speed/revs for a while.
Don't worry about keeping under 55. I think car manufacturers try to make the break-in simple for the average automobile owner that doesn't care or understand. What you REALLY need to do during break-in is VARY the rpms, and get some good mid-rpm range load on the rings. The WORST thing you can do to a new engine is baby it... all that will result from lugging it around is glazed cylinder walls and higher oil consumption. But you don't want to be revving the engine high: keeping the revs under 4k rpm is a safe bet for the first 1000 miles.

that's correct, plus don't use the cruise control, and don't brake hard. Also don't look back at a bunch of girls who will be looking at the car

The engine as Kreativ has pointed must be broken in by keeping the RPM low and dont baby it because the rings and the cylinder walls dont conform properly. You know when you have properly broken it in when you see smoke out of your tailpipe
