Default type of coolant?

does anyone know what type of coolant a 2001 es would use, or can any coolant be used. only 90 thousand miles and already a leak< also, does anyone know how much a water pump, timing belt, and other 90k stuff will cost at the dealer. along with a new muffler and a new heat shield. jw

It does matter. First, you have to know what type of coolant is already in your motor. The best bet is to take your car to a toyota dealership and have them check your coolant. They can tell you what you have and what you need. You cannot mix the Walmart or service station type green coolant with Toyota's red coolant. It will clog up your radiator with a thick gel like gunk and your car will overheat. So, here's a tip: if the coolant in your car is NOT red or reddish brown, then you are PROBABLY ok to buy the walmart stuff. But if it is red, or reddish brown (brown means it's pretty dirty and should be changed anyways) then you need to buy Toyota brand Ethylene-glycol coolant.
Hope that's not too confusing for you...

Lexus cars are made by Toyota so they would also use Toyota coolant.
Again, do yourself a favor and take your car to your local Toyota dealership and ask them to check your coolant for you. It won't cost much and then you will know exactly which type you need. They'll tell you that either:

A) you have Toyota brand coolant in your system

or

B) you have another type of coolant in your system.

If you have Toyota brand coolant in your sytem then you need to use Toyota brand coolant to top it up.

The coolant will be cheaper at a Toyota dealer.

Couple of other things that can be used for your car are cheaper at Toyota.

The RED long lasting coolant is what originally was put in your cooling system from the factory. Green coolant is not recommended!

Add a bottle of Redline WaterWetter while you're at it.
