Smile Opinions on Lights for my 96 es.

Hello I just got a 96 es and the headlights are pretty dim and im going to change them. Can I just go to autozone and buy some bright bulbs like the silvania silverstars? will they hook up with no modifications? Does anyone have any suggestions on what headlights to get or your experiences with headlights you've had.

I'm going to drive down to this place and check out the condition of theirs before I buy from them. I'd email them and see if they have anywhere thats close to you. They quoted me 22something for one headlight...

Yes Silverstars will fit fine, the sizes you need are 9006 for the lowbeams, and 9005 for the highbeams. Changing them out should only take a couple of minutes. If you really want them to be as bright as possible, be sure to clean up your outer lens really good. There are many different ways to go about it, try using our search feature above and look up headlight restoration, headlight cleaning, etc and you should get a lot of help.

If you buy the correct bulb type, there should be no problem... except that you might still be dissapointed in the light output, so you should switch to HID lighting. But first you should look in the Lighting forum here for related topics, etc. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/lighting-128/

Don't get Silver stars! They are coated so light output is actually less, and they don't last too long either.
What you REALLY need to do is do the 9006-> 9005 mod.
This doesn't mod the light or housing at all, only the bulb plug. It won't melt the wiring harness b/c its oem wattage.
There is a thread on Club Lexus on how to do this, the 9005 bulb does not have a painted tip and i think is 65 watts. The 9006 is 55 watts and has a painted tip, which means less light output.
You basically take the 9005 bulb, clip off two plastic alignment bars to make the low beam wiring harness fit the bulb.
The bulb i had my friend use is the Cool Blue line, and its half as expensive as the Silver stars.

2nd, my friend got SilverStar's and they didn't last that long for him. I think he told me 4 months? If ur real serious about it, go for the HID's.

i had silverstars for about a year before i changed over to hids on my 96...i briefly considered 9006 to 9005 mod and even HIRs...silverstars will look brighter at first but its not that much over stocks. hids are way to go. its expensive but well worth it.

HID FTW!

I bought my set on ebay for $150 shipped, and they have been trouble free for more than a year longer than my Silver stars (50 bucks)
Now, you can get a decent set of 9006 Hid's on Ebay for 60 bucks shipped.

Nowadays HIDs are too cheap for anyone to even consider HIRs!

I bought silverstars and they didn't break after my accident (supprisingly after it did smash the headlight)and i'm still gonna do a HID retrofit. Like everyone says here the cost of HID is not much diff. and the results are much better. So at least get a PNP HID kit and retrofit if you really want some bright(and legal) headlights
