Default EGR excessive flow help

car: 1996 ES300. I went to Discount Auto Parts to get me engine light checked out....They said "EGR excessive flow" is my problem. But when i asked them what it is, its functions and how hard to replace it... they didn't know anything nor do they carry it. So could anyone that also experienced this with their vehicle tell me whats its function, what will happen if its not replaced and maybe how much it is to fix?? thanks

you could have a leak somewhere, its function is to recirculate exhauast.

what will happen is... you'll run richer. and your hopes of saving the ozone layer is doomed.

Is it a big issue?? Would you recommend taking to the dealer or just a average shop to get it checked and fixed??

might be carbon buildup keeping the valve open you can remove the valve and clean it and the intake

^^^

theres a possibility, try cleaning it. most likely thats all it is.

from what i hear,it can reduce power to your motor.

big issuse, if you want to save the ozone layer. lol

you could just go to a average shop and get it fixed.

hello i also have this problem. the engine light came on last week scanned it and code and p1411 and 402 came up. excessive flow or egr . mechanic said he was focusing on the 402 was sure thats what it was ordered a sensor or switch part a little plastic piece that runs side by side with other ones which plugs in and is located under the lexus cover plate close by to the egr valve. replaced it and cleaned out a hose the connects the the egr valve and after 40 miles light came back on. i disconnected the battery and drove it 7 miles and light came back on. i brought it back to the mechanic now he says tomorrow he is gonna replace a couple hoses that connects to egr and if that doesnt work it is the egr valve. um okay i guess it's process of elimination. does this sound right? or have a picked wrong mechanic? meaning should of i went directly to toyota? toyota would of beat me in the head on the prices this mechanic is local but not a chain shop. and i cant return the part that wasnt the problem. i just do not wanna by rgr valve and get it replaces then this happens all over again and he says oh its something else because im pretty sure egr valve is atleast a couple hundred dollars any replies/opnions would be appreciated thanks
