The DPDT is necessary so you can alternate the connection of 2 different wires. If you could have a 4PDT (I don't think there is one, but I hope you get my meaning), you could alternate the positive AND negative of both left and right. With the DPDT, you can still alternate the connection of both positives or both negatives. I chose both positives. In dead silence, you can j-u-s-t barely hear the CD playing in the background - almost unnoticeable. If you could switch all 4 wires, the CD could be totally eliminated.

I didn't make this diagram, but why reinvent the wheel...
Also, I think this is a SPST switch, but the concept is the same... only with 2 circuits instead of 1.

In this setting, there is no connection:
A------
-B------
C------

In this switch setting, which I will call circuitBC, connects B and C circuit:
A------
B------
/C------

In this switch setting, which I will call circuitAB, connects the A and B circuit:
\A------
B------
C------
