Cool

New pics of the rack (old and new) are in:

Yeah...the old rack was really bad, and the front sway bar bushings were DRY too. Lube time.

Cool

An additional tidbit that brought this problem to full resolution:

After bleeding out the system and with the new rack, steering was brought back to normal and 200% improved over the previous state.

HOWEVER, there was still the slightest perceptible "bind" according to JPI (yes, that's how good and thorough JPI is).

The steering wheel shaft was removed and the lower steering shaft u-joint (that goes right into the rack & pinion) was inspected. It was binding up noticeably.

JPI called Lexus, who wanted $210 for the part; we said "No, thank you."
JPI got the idea of soaking the u-joint for 30 minutes in an oil bucket. The u-joint now works like new. It just needed lubrication; there's no play in it. For reference, here's a picture of the u-joint.

All that's left now is getting an alignment and the Boulevardier should be steering within normal limits before the day is done. I CAN'T WAIT to cruise in her again.

New muffler this weekend...more on that over in my "Exhausting" work log/thread.

My hope is this log with pics, analysis and resolution will help ES bros who're having power steering issues.

Will do!
Look for an update here this week (I have to do it this week, since I'm having an OEM muffler installed this coming Saturday.)

u could try just replacing the belows

i would hose it down with wd40, to get any dirt off that got on racks innards, once you have the old bellows off.

ps belows basically means boot

EDIT Nevermind, before anyone gets mad at me, I see now that they got a new rack already. my browser didn't show those pictures until just now! lol

I have the same problem (pronounced with cold). Just started happening within the last week....would an indicator come on if power steering fluid was low?

There's no instrument-gauge indicator for power steering fluid. You'll need to check that under the hood for sure!
