Default Replacing water pump...

My ES has started to leak coolant over the weekend.. Suspecting its the water pump.. So far I've got all the belts off.. but im stuck at trying to get the cam out.. The bolts stuck and i've broken one rachet, and also tried the impact gun ..

The bolt does not want to give.. Had to end tonight due to the "elbow" extender for the impact gun snapping..

My question is that I've looked up the threads on replacing the water pump, and assume that both cams need to come out in order to get the metal plate out.. But the other cam is in a tight spot, and the way things are going with this cam, I don't really feel too confident..

Anyone else encountered this b4?? Or know of a better way to get the cams out?? I heard about these cam spacers, or separators but not too sure??

TIA

are you talking about the cam gears? the cams don''t need to come out to change the water pump.

I dont know what Im missing here, but after going through the threads i was under the impression that the cam gears needed to come off.. I also don't see how the water pump can come off with the black metal plate over a portion of it..

So, I dont have to take the cam gears and metal plate off??

Heres one I snapped...

Just take out the other bolts holding the cover. This will allow it to be pulled out just enough to shimmy the pump out.

the cam gears do need to come out so that you can get that backing plate off so that the water pump would come out easily. There is a special tool that holds the cam gear while you loosen the bolt. Try asking a local auto repair shop if they have one. I'll try to post a picture of the one i use.

no you dont need to take off the cams. just take off your thermostat housing and u can easily pull the plate aside.

thats what i did a few days ago, my water pump was leaking after some 3,000 miles and a new motor. my problem was the gasket =0

no need to take off cams, it would be fairly difficult if u do.

I tried to get the water pump out with the plate in... it didnt give.. although it was only a few cm off... ended up putting the timing belt back on, and had my bro hold the pulley bolt with a wrench, and I took a breaker bar to the cam gear bolt.. worked like a charm..

New pumps in and I made my way home (was in MN) w/o any problems..
