Buying "new" to me high mileage es300
Hey guys this is my first post and i have a few questions. i plan on buying a 1992 es300 with 138k on it. It was a one owner dealer trade in. Ive checked it out and it needs a few little things here and there but the body MINT. First question is there anything special to these cars i should specifically look for when i go back? Question number 2 is i plan on changing all the fluids, running seafoam and fuel injector cleaner through it, most likely spark plugs/wires also. Any other specific things i should change/clean....any links to other good posts or input would be awesome..thanks

hey me 2
im in the same boat as you so I 'd just say do what you're doing. mine needed rear calipers very very soon after I got it. so make sure that yours aren't seizing. also, the guy who had it before me had just donethe clutch and replaced one of the axles [i think d/s] because it had a torn boot [not because anything mechanically wrong with it]. he also repaced teh y pipe [the pipe that connects to both manifolds, and conencts to the catalytic converter] due to rusting/holes or something. so, i would say check for exhaust leaks. mine is great too. only thing is that it apepars that the clear coat is pretty much completely gone from the hood. i also rubbed the front headlights to bring the 'clear' look back to them. he also replaced the radiator not long before i bought it [probably a plastic seperation type problem]. just note, as he told me , that the previous owners who had them up to say 100K miles never change spark lpuigs [most dont]. so, check that as the prev owner probably didn't . also check the battery [have teh whole charging system checked; free, at many places].

to the both of you!
There's SO MUCH information in this ES forum. Lots of forum folks will tell you that the is your best friend - and it is - but I'll pass on the one "check it!" thing that would've saved me some serious bucks.
Check that power steering system out, specifically the hoses, for any leaks! I've had dealership and independent Lexus service folks tell me that those leaks are the most destructive and insidious problems these cars can have. The problem is that many folks will let those leaks go for a while - the prices of the power steering hoses are very high - and meanwhile everything around and below the leak site is corroded and destroyed. (In your mind's eye, equate the Dexron "steering fluid" to Alien's blood in those Alien movies)
One local shop checks for those leaks and makes certain they indicate, in the customer's file, that a leak was pointed out. They tell me that folks say "That's expensive, I'll take care of that later," then components are destroyed, and they come back and want to blame the service folks because of the extent of the damage caused by the leak. [/soapbox]
Seriously, have a little fun with the search engine for the ES forum...sometimes I'll just type in something random and I'm shocked by the information and the stories of the folks who've gone before us in this forum. Cheers!
