Default Overheating...radiator questions...

Car overheating. Eng Temp redlining and steam/smoke coming from under hood. Checked quickly for loose hoses, haven't found one yet. This appears to be a radiator problem. My question is:

1.) Can i use a camry radiator for a replacement?

2.) Is the radiator held in place with just those two top bolts?

Oddly, There were two different types of radiators used for that year. The part numbers are the same for both the Camry and the ES300.

It really depends on if the radiator from the camry was the same type as the ES300.

Look for a part number on the radiators.

Type #1: 1640007040

Type #2: 1640062160

I have yet to pull out the radiator, but are either numbers going to be for a part that will work with both the ES and the Camry?

Also, I purchased a radiator earlier today that will be arriving 2morrow. Based on what you have just said about the 2 radiators, are the two parts interchangeable?

If the Camry and ES setups are the same for the radiator that would be huge because the only Haynes repair manuals that seem to be around are for the '91-96 Camry.

One part # is for a manual transmission and the other one is for an automatic. Dont blow your head gaskets by overheating it so much. It only takes one shot.

Strangely, they didn't even ask me if my car was manual or auto (its an auto). Yeah I got it off the road before it started getting bad, hopefully I've avoided any serious damage.

We put water into the radiator in through the radiator cap, as opposed to hte resivoir, and got water building up at the crossmember of the frame. I am assuming it is the radiator, but are there other hoses/connections that we should check for a leak/blockup?

i believe the two are actually different from camry and es300. because my brothers vcv had a radiator replacement, and it had the lid spout on the top like most radiators, where as the es300 doesnt have the spout located on the radiator itself.

we still used the radiator, we just blocked off the overflow line.

Checked the dipstick, no coolant in there so im pretty confident that I didnt blow the head gasget.

Did the replacement today, everything went OK, then it started overheating again. Im thinking thermostat. Where is it located on the '93 ES?

it probably is your thermostat, so replace and call it a day. fairly simple. and if this is not the problem, then next is probably waterpump. now this one is more difficult

Haha actually I have moved on to the thermostat and it is a lot harder than i had anticipated. Where a lot of the thermostats are located where the upper radiator hose goes into the engine, mine is located at the end of the lower hose, which can only be accessed by removing the right front wheel and dust guard as well as the washer fluid and cooland resivoirs. The frame is so close to the housing that the 3 bolts that release the water intake housing can only be gotten off with a wobbler socket or a cornering extender. This could possibly be as hard as getting off the water pump!
