Got an 02 ES 300 with 75K miles, I use mobil1 synthetic and have it changed between 4K-5K miles... this car is 5 years old with NOT ONE problem... this car is driven daily (mainly freeway/highway).

I'ts not an american car at all. But, this engine has been known to throw some sludge fits. Make sure you're using API SL [or API SM, but SL is kinda better] motor oil, 10w30 or if below 0 deg fahrenheit, 5w30 or ..... and make sure you use purolator or toyota or lexus oil filter. dont use fram. dont use mobil1 filter. my 2 cents

why not use mobile 1 filter?

in ways i think the oil getting dark is measurabe.

and when i mean dark, i mean dark

if you wash your car with just water, and you see just water on the ground, no dirt, then you're car is clean. NO, your car is still dirty. You didn't use good soap.

oil gets dark from holding dirt.

how would you know when it's fulyl saturated with dirt? some oils and some cars make the oil look dark very quickly, while others dont. i konw this from doing 100's of oil changes on tons of cars.
only way to know is to have a sample of the oil anaylzed.

the mobil 1 filters have internal shortcuts in their designing that can lead to failures. be ware. purolator [and pureone by same company] are the best deals. they are also poor for filtration/$, compared to the purolator.

I change every 7,500 miles with Mobile 1.
Started using Mobile 1 when I had 75K miles on her.
She now has 242K miles and purrs like a kitten and no sludge problems at all.
YMMV

If your oil is getting dark from holding dirt then you've got filtration issues. Oil darkens primarily from combustion byproducts/blowby, and oxidation. It's the oil "wearing out," not dirt.

Today's oils(API SL-SM) are very good oils. I would run any of them 5000 miles and not lose sleep over it. Personally I am using Pennzoil Platinum 5w20/30 and changing it out every 5k miles just for warranty reasons otherwise it'll be going 10k miles.
