Well im not sure but you have that ES with like 20,000 miles on it right? Check the tranny fluid level. The pan gasket might be leaking especially if it sat with all the fluid at the bottom of the tranny for the last decade.

And the tranny shifted fine before you changed the fluid? Im not sure then, im stumped. I assume you used Dexron and the level is good?

it has been like that since I got the car. just forgot mentioning about it. mechanic tried to adjust a cable, then shifting became jerky, but it solved it's "overnight parking sickness" so I told him to adjust it again to give me smoother shifting but it just brought back the old problem. there seem to be no fine adjustment to the tranny.

yeah they all do that where it won't shift out of second when the car is very cold, takes about a minute, if that and the tranny works normally. I believe it is programmed to do that.

arnelli, do you mean that the car will not shift period as in no gear changes & you can't go anywhere (reverse or drive) until you let the vehicle idle for 10 - 15 minutes & then it will engage? Or the shifts when cold are extremely harsh right after a cold start, but things settle when it's warmed up?

It's A: the car will not shift period as in no gear changes & you can't go anywhere (reverse or drive) until you let the vehicle idle for 10 - 15 minutes & then it will engage.

But I tried shifting without releasing the handbrakes and suddenly it shifted well even after an overnight parking. strange

crazy, this is the stuff you encounter with cars that sit for a long time unfortunately, been there.
