I have a 1992 ES300 and I just replaced the timing belt and water pump and now the car won't start. It turns over but does not seem to try to start. I checked and it has spark. I tried to start it with the two ground wires by the engine torque bar disconnected (I forgot) but I have since reconnected them and it still will not start. Any ideas of what to look for? After I put the new TB on I rotated the crank 2 times and made sure that the cam timing was lined up so I don't think it is a timing issue.

the water pump went out and leaked coolent, however the car still ran and the timing belt appeared ok. The only thing I did was the timing belt, water pump and crank seal.
It won't even fire up at all, it just cranks.
I guess my best bet is to pull off the upper timing cover again and check the timing another time.

Thanks for the help guys. The rear cam gear was off, I didn't realize that there were two markings on that gear and I had used the wrong one. Good thing its a non-interference engine... all is good now.

So it runs now?
If not, check the crank gear for broken teeth. It gets the crankshaft position/speed signal from that. I broke one off one time and didnt realize it. I finally looked on a scan tool and saw that it was not receiving an rpm signal. I replaced that and it started right up.

Oh yeah sorry if I wasn't clear it runs perfect now! Just had to pull the upper cover back off, take the tensioner off and reset the rear cam gear. Fired right up after that

Which marking did you use. I have a similar problem and have to reset the timing on mine as well. I'm almost sure that the rear cam is off. I'm going back to set the timing tomorrow and want to get it right.

There are two marks on the gear and two in the cover, you just have to make sure you have both marks matching the cover and you are all set.
