Transmission
I just recently purchased a 93 ES300/automatic with a 130k on it. I drives great and seems to shift smooth, but every once and a while, it is real slow off the line from a complete stop. It doesn't feel like it is hunting for gears, but it takes its time up to 20mph. I have seen similar problems online and the suggestions range from changing the Trans. fluid to replacing the knock sensor. When it is up to speed it has no problem for the most part. I have replaced the plugs and and the air filter. I'm also wondering about the fuel injection perhaps. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

One thing you could do is check the tranny oil and see the color red/pink good, brown change, black is bad. If you really are conserned about it you could take it to a tranny shop and have them look at it. Granted it won't be the cheapest of all things to do but they could also tell things that might become a problem in the future. Just my 2cents

Thanks for the reply. I did check the fluid the other day and it look closer to the brown side. I am going to change the fluid just as soon as I go to the store and get a 10mm hex wrench (blasted SST's). Thanks for the tip though. This is my first Lexus and I want it to run like a top for a long time.

I replaced the tranny fluid this morning and it helped a little, but I still have some lag when starting from a complete stop. There isn't any harsh shifting and it is still happening very randomly. I'm going to try the filter replacement next and see what that does. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just thought I would mention (because I forgot), that despite the lag, it accelerates fine when shift down into "L" and go through the normal shifts. Hope that helps.

Transmission??
In addition to the concerns in my other postings, I have noticed that after I start the car, it seems to idle in the 1500 RPM range for the first minute or so(then it slowly idles down), which I know is on the high side. That's why I'm thinking there may be a separate issue othan the Tranny. Thanks.

My only concern is that this seems a little high for a V6. I've had 4 Cyl. motors that didn't idle that high and were just as old. My last car was a 1995 Talon (non-turbo) with a 145k and it never idled past 1000, even on a cold start. I just think that there is something that needs to be tweeked to bring down the RPM's. I appreciate the tip though 3000. Keep 'em coming.

It can also be the type of oil you are using. 10w-30 may be the recommended oil, but this car is old now so you could use 5w-20. It'll be easier on the oil pump (that's what I've heard).

I'll have to look in to it. My only concern is with the thin air up here (5100 ft. above sea level). I don't want to burn up the oil or anything like that, but I am going to have to try something. I may look into cleaning the throttle body, if it's not too big of a hassle. I really like this car and I want to keep it running smooth for as long as reasonably possible!!

is your check engine light on? A few things to check while you are doing routine maintenance is a new PCV valve and also clean out the EGR tube. I pulled the egr off of an engine with 220k and it was completely stopped up with gunk. As far as a slow accel it could be lots of things. Run a top end cleaner and fuel system treatment. unplug efi fuse for a few minutes and replace it to reset the ecm. check for vacuum leaks. is your PWR button (on the shift indicator panel) on?

Thanks jet_jockey. That's a lot of info. The check has not come on once. The PCV valve would be a cheap and easy fix. As far as the PWR button, sometimes I do have it on. The acceleration problem seems to happen whether I have it on or not. One stupid question...Where is the EGR tube? I am taking it to my mechanic this week to see what he thinks. He has a LS400, so he should be able to provide some additional insight into my plight. Thanks for all the tips!!
