I've read on a few threads that the 94+ es300 is OBDII, which has me at a loss, since the diagnostic hookup under my dash is a round OBDI type and not the rectangular OBDII. Whats the deal?

right. The 94 model es300 is apparently in between obd1 and 2. It still has the obd1 test ports, but every place I've looked and asked has stated that it is in fact an obd2 system.
Which brings me to my next question, has anyone tried jumping E1 and TE1 to retrieve codes? Mine does absolutely nothing when I try, so Im wondering if its a common thing or not.

UPDATE: I actually ended up buying a scanner for it. I didn't realize the car has 3 data link connectors on it, there is the circular toyota obd-1 connector under the dash, there is oddball rectangular one on the engine, and then there is the obd-2 connector sitting right next to the fuse panel inside the car. However, its still not linking up on any of them

It's kind of hard to screw this one up. You just plug it in and it links up. The scanner i bought is brand new, but just to *****s and giggles I hooked up another scanner I have laying around that I know works, and its the same deal, no pulse signal. So I tried both the under dash obd1 and obd2 ports with no results. So, tomorrow I get to start checking pins back at the ECM. Will keep you guys updated.

update: After a good bit of testing, found out that the wire coming from the ecm that goes to Data Link Connector 3 (OBDII) signal wire, was dead. This wire also runs the length of the car, and stops at lots of places in between. After disconnecting it from the ECM , and then reconnecting it, we picked up a voltage feed on it again. At that point the vehicle started running good again, and the code scanner is working. So far we've isolated the problem down to either a bad wire connection at the ECM, or the ECM itself. I tried several times to replicate the problem by pulling on the wires and what not, but to no avail.
If it is a loose connection problem, then the probable cause is the audio system that I just installed a few weeks ago.
