New Owner brake service question 05 ES330
Greetings All, first post here. I am new owner of 05 ES330, a fine car that was serviced at Lexus for its short life before I bought it. Previous owner was hard on the brakes and at 45,000 miles there is 5-10% brake life left according to the good folks at my Local Lexus dealer when they were doing a few warranty items for me.
The dealer quoted me a little over $600 for all four wheels for new pads and rotor machining. This seems a little (alot actually) high to me. Any thoughts about getting the brakes done would be appreciated. I have about 5 months left on warranty and would not mind having a good relationship with Lexus dealer, but I am not fond of spending money without getting good value.
Thank you for your input, what a great site this is!!

Hi Michael! Congrats on the new car and welcome to CL. It's a great site and the people here are really friendly and very helpful. I have the same car in blun onyx. I love it! It's fully loaded with all the options. I love the Mark Levinson stereo. My commute to work is quite long so music is the only thing that gets me through. Regarding your brake job price quote, that is WAY too high and the dealer is ripping you off. You can shop for your own brakes and rotors and just go to your local shop and have them put it on you. That's what I do. Some of the CL bros on here will give you prices that they have paid. I haven't had to change my brakes yet so I have no idea how much it really cost. I will tell you though that I have a 300E mercedes and I have never had to pay more than 120-150 bucks for my brake pads and sensors and my local shop putting them on for me, and that's putting on mercedes brake pads.
Enjoy the forum. Now go post some pics of your new baby.

Front dealer pads=$59.95
Rear dealer pads= $50.95
Front brake pad labor + rotor resurface= 1.8hour
Rear brake pad labor + rotor resurface= 1.8/hrs
Lets assume the shop is at $100/hour which should make it no more than $470.90 for everything. That is still a little on the high side, but better than $600. Try to negotiate them down to a total of 3/hours rather than 3.6. Also refuse to pay any shop supply charges, tell them that you are not stocking their supply shelves.
Hope this helps

LOL Agreed!
I had my front breaks done back in December at a local mechanic who seemed ok. Front brake pads + resurface rotors = about 200. However, my front left brake makes a sqeally noise now and clicks when I brake. Sounds nasty. Took it back to them and they said its because I went the generic stuff. I know I know, I wasn't thinking at the time... I will be getting better pads and rotors soon. My rear brakes are due very soon

Thanks for the welcome and feedback folks. I think $375-425 is more inline with what independent shops in the area charge using Toyota pads and turning rotors. I have rarely had good luck just replacing pads on other cars so will go with rotor machining when pads are replaced.
Not to beat up on local dealer, as they have treated me very well with a few warranty issues which were handled quickly, at no cost, with loaner vehicle provided, but their service costs across the board seem very high. 45K service was quoted at over $300 and that is cabin airfilter, oil change and check for loose bolts etc. I do like the cookies and free drinks though.
When I get digital camera I will post pics. Its green/grey with tan interior. No Mark Levinson sound though, just the Lexus sound which is okay but is not equal to the stock stereo in our 01 Camry LE. It has 17" wheels.
Thanks again all
