Default 2002 es300 steering wheel hard to turn

Hello everyone, I am having problems with my steering wheel. Whenever I first start the car, my steering wheel is so hard to turn. After about 5 minutes of driving it is smooth sailing from then on. Is anyone else having this problem?

Check your power steering fluid level. You may need to top it off or flush it. There could also be a problem with the pump.

Hi JSM1284,

I have also the same car and same problem. It only happens during the cold weather(below 40 Farenheit). I checked with the Tiresplus and they completely replaced the Rack and Pinion assembly in FL and worked fine becuase the great weather. However, the problem is still there now becuase I moved to IL and during this winter. I checked with local mechanic and he said the fluid is wrong and flushed and refilled twice. Even I feel the same problem. I want to know he is using the same required PS fluid at the correct level. But, still it freezes and I have to warm up the car by pressing the Gas pedal and after 2 minutes of warming up the Car, the Steering wheel roatest just fine. What could be the other issue?

The correct fluid is Dexon 3 for power steering. I had this problem and for awhile I put Lucas stop leak in it but eventually replaced the rack.

pretty sure on this one... I think you have a steering rack starting to go. My 93 does same thing, and other cars I've owned have done it. The experts call it "morning sickness". The teflon (seals??)... I know it is teflon... inside start to wear out, but once warmed up, it will perform properly. Just keep driving it until it gets worse. You should get a fair amount of time before it gets to the point of needing replacing. Unless you want to spend money now.

I really don't think your fluid is the issue. If it was related to your PS pump, you'd have symptoms all the time.

I saw a seller on ebay; approx. $100 shipped for a rebuilt steering rack.Mechanic re & re time will make you cry a little harder.

kannandk, a guess...but maybe a cheap after-market rack and it just didn't last??
