Does anyone know the price of charcoal cannister or ballpark? I've heard it is over $500.
I have 2002 Lexus SC430 which threw P0440, P0441, and P0446 even after replacing fuel cap and one evap hose. My car guy dropped the fuel tank, did smoke test, and inspected all evap system. He saw only issue is the overfill valve which he replaced, cleared all codes. 2 days after driving it home, the P0440 and P0446 returned.
He then inspected evap hoses again and replaced all the hoses. Cleared codes and the next week after 100+ miles driven, the P0440 and P0446 returned again.
Finally, he said he needs to keep my car for couple of days to confirm if it could be the charcoal cannister. What's crazy is, I asked him before he was all done with overfill valve replacemnt if he check the charcoal cannister to make sure it was good. He said yes but look where we are now! Super annoyed and frustrated. After all my research and delving, last thing it could be is either charcoal cannister or maybe the pressure vapor sensor or both.
This is a forum section for a 1991-2006 ES250/300/330, here is a section for your car.
P0446 is more often than not caused by a bad VSV for Pressure Switching Valve. There is a Vacuum Switching Valve somewhere on the charcoal canister designed for the test procedures that the car performs during each startup to check for system tightness. Due to a poor placement of said solenoid, they do tend to rust out or collect dust from the road and seize, which is one of the main reasons for a P0446 code, and if the solenoid got seized in the Open position, it will very well cause P0440 EVAP leak code as well.
In short, find the solenoid near the charcoal canister and check that it is working as intended, use a tube to blow in it while you actuate it from the battery, do not trust the resistance measurements and the fact that it clicks, those are not the indications of the solenoid working properly, trust me, I got burnt on this more times than I am willing to admit.
@Arsenii I was aware that this thread isn't for my exact car model but wanted to share and ask anyway. I did search in the forum for my year and model before arriving here. Just wanted to seek more help. Thanks for sharing your info and tips! I'll keep it in mind.
Just a further followup to the P0446 code: it is not necessarily the Charcoal Canister Assembly. After throwing this code and doing some poking around on the internets, I looked at the sensor assembly under the plastic Lexus shroud, by the fuel rails. This was all original and cooked to death by the engine. Two plastic barbs had detached from the sensors and the rubber hoses had turned solid, definitely a problem area.
I wound up replacing the three-sensor assembly with Lexus #25701-20140. Two rubber hoses were included and I replaced a few others as needed. I reset the code and added 150+ miles to the car. No CEL and a pass by CA smog. Very happy with the results, hopefully the car lasts another two years.
Did you ever have any performance problems with that CEL? I'm not sure if it's related to the CELs, but my car has been having poor acceleration uphill and I only have 0440, 0441, 0446 codes. I switched VSV under the hood and to no avail. I think a vacuum leak at the intake could be a wild card too.
