I have a 96 ES 300, i can't put the gear in drive, the only way i could do it is hit the release lever and then i can put it in drive, do i need to replace the whole shifter or just the handle.

Please help me out, thanks

ive had problems in the past with worn out parts, neutral sw, debris,

I went to the junk yard and replaced the whole shifter assembly, it only shift when i hit the release lever, i haven't disconnect the negative cable from the hood, you guy think if i reset the ecu it might be able to think it hooked up, please help me out.
