when you try to start the car and it clicks only one time??? sounds like 90% starter to me. most of the time when you hear that click it's either the battery is low or your starter is no good. but since you have all the lights and radio working most likely it's starter. that gear needs to pop out and turn the flywheel. i don't think WD-40 will do anything

if your alternator is bad then you should have no problem starting the car after you put new battery in there and it will probably die and won't turn on any lights or radio. japanese motors are easier to start then most of the european vehicles. some Benzo will crank but it won't start due to not enough battery power to spin the flywheel fast enough and one of the SL500 from my work had that problems. so im 90% sure it's not your alternator.
