Unhappy CV Boot Ripped... New Axle! 98 ES

hey guys, i took my car for an alignment today and i found out that the cv boot on the outer driver side was ripped to shreds.. dont have any idea how it happened but then i went out and bought a new boot after i removed it from the wheel and ripped off the rest of the boot... i found no snap pin to split the axle open... and now i just found out that its pressed in and cannot be split open... now forcing me to buy a new axle

sucks...

even with a ripped boot, depending on how long you drove like that...it's much better to replace the whole CV joint to be safe.

yeah, true, but oem can take a beating. i drove for about months on an aftermarket with a ripped boots, and it was going to fail at any minute, the slider pins had fallen out, bearing joints were chunking off. so just be careful. btw, you need to remove the whole axle to replace that boot. and you have to remove the inboard boot as well. so might as well get both, inboard and outboard, or get an aftermarket unit where it will be an R&R job. just remember to pop out the axle from the tranny with a shock. it is held in by a c-clip, and is a PITA to get off.

got lucky. my buddy and i worked on it for a couple days. not that axle for a couple days, but off and on, since we redid my whole front end suspension/bushings. but if you use the oem boots from toyota/lexus, then you will need a top quality banding clamp. i broke two of them, before i took it to toyota to clamp for me.

if you change your own oil, it's real easy to get under there and inspect all your boots every so often. definitely worth the time to do it! could save you an axle next time
