ES300 Sound Deadening DIY

I just spent the day finishing the second part of the sound deadening project:
The two rear doors, and the trunk. (Rear Doors are same as the front door, so no pics)
First, i gutted out the trunk, and wiped it down with some 409.
I didn't have too much raammat to cover everything, but i made sure to get the wheel wells, and the large areas of un dampened metal.
Then, I used some left over Prego Laminate Flooring Underlayment foam and 3m spray adhesive to cover the exterior shell, the floor of the spare tire compartment, and trunk bed. (3 layers on everything)
Then, i took some packaging foam pads, and stuffed up the area just above the wheel well area to absorb road noise, and finished off by adding a layer of ensolite foam over the wheel well.
There was a big drop in road noise coming from the rear after the deadening.
Now, the wind noise from the mis aligned seals sounds louder, as well as the engine noise, since I eliminated the rear noise...
Next, I'm going to add foam to the center console area to reduce exhaust and road noise.

shame you didn't record a dB mesaurement before to show the progress and have real evidence of the progress and such
radio shack 20 dollars digital SPL meter , geesh, cause now I want to do this and I won't know how much it's worth it

Its that cheap!!?!?!?
Well, I think we should record it in a non dampened car, and in my car to see how effective it was..
Only problem is, it would have to be the same road, and same location measured, etc.
I'll buy one tomorrow, and measure it in my car and my mom's 03 es300 to see if its quieter than her car

Did the front seat floor area today.
I don't feel like taking out the seats and stripping the interior, so i basically took out the side molding, and rolled back the carpet, vacuumed the under floor, and stuck 2 layers of foam underlayment (pictured) and 1 layer of ensolite foam.
So now, I have to find a way to do the center console, and rear floor without taking out the whole interior.
After driving, I've found some problem areas that need some attention..
When driving on smooth roads, theres less road noise, but on rough roads, either the tires are making noise, or the area directly above it... That means I need more foam over the rear strut area and the front wheel well.
Second spot is the moon roof, which is a big culprit for wind noise. The seals for one thing are not that great, and the glass is pretty thin. I'll have to find someway to put a layer of foam on the sunroof cover.

One area that I found that did the most good....... front wheel wells!
I removed the plastic wheelwell liner and layed in 3 layers of different types of sounds pads I had and it really helped drown out the road noise.
I also removed the factory hood pad and loaded padding behind it and reinstalled it.

Matted the trunk lid on new years, but no pics.
Off to radio shack to buy a sound meter (49 bucks) i will return it when i'm done. lol
Any stock es300 want to measure the sound level? I always find some distraction from studying for midterms.
K experiment done..
test was done on a new concrete highway (56) and surface streets were in good condition.
idle 50 Db
idle w/ fan on low 53 Db
40 mph 64 dB (2300 RPM)
45 mph 65 Db
45@ 2800 rpm 68 Db
65 mph 68 Db
70 mph 69 Db
80 mph 73 Db
This seems pretty noisy...anyone care to test a stock es?
The sound meter was placed by the parking brake handle .

The Motor Week 5spd review said the ES had a sound level of 68 Db at 60 mph...but I'm not sure how that test was performed. I still have noise from unbalanced rims..i'll have to get those checked out.

OMG haha. Definetly not a performance mod. Looks techie. Interesting.
BTW 40MPH at 2300RPM? Was that 4th gear? Just wondering how much difference there is from a stock tranny to mine. hmmm

BTW the green pergo underlayment foam blocks only mid to high frequency sound, which means it does nothing for low frequency noise and vibration
I'll have to install some proper vinyl nitride foam and 2 layers of aluminum sheeting for the front floor area. The rear wheel well area access from the inside of the trunk is full of empty space..will need to fill that with foam, and finally the front plastic wheel well covers will be dampened with Raammat and a layer of foam.
-yeah that was 4th gear
