Default Starter Problems

Hey guys,

Yesterday was the second time I have had trouble starting my 99 ES. It took about a minute for it to turn over. Pepboys checked the alternator and battery and everything is perfect. They also turned the key over several times and had no problems.

So my question is could this only be a starter problem? And if so is there any threads as to how to do an install or should I let the big guns handle it? Thanks. Also what part/brand is best?

A good test to tell if the starter is going out, it to give it a couple good jabs with a pry bar or similar tool. If it then turns over, replace the starter. I'm not sure about your year, but on gen 1, replacing the starter is not that big of a deal. Make sure that you disconnect the neg battery cable before starting, it will avoid any nasty issues if the battery cable going to the starter hits a ground.

Hi SillsyB,

Check out my reply to the thread on the link below - this MAY or may not be the problem - see what you think. I let my auto electrician fix it all - it may be simple for some but it was a bit too involved for me! Didn't cost that much either
