i think bmw's, the square patches are jack support areas. on new cars, theyre rounder, and i think they are usually camera/reverse sensors.

someone care to chime in.

If you are speaking on the back of a bumper then yes Charley240 is correct they are back up sensors. As far as lift points both of my cars have "knocks" in the unibody for lift points now granted both my subi and lexus are both 97's but it seems like a universal way to designate lift points.

No, I am not talking about the back up sensors.

What is the square to the left of my license plate?

Without being 100% its probably a knock out to cover one of the screws used to hold the bumper on if someone else doesn't chime in let me know and I'll look it up in All Data.

If you pop the cap off, there is a place to screw in a hook. The point of it.....if you happen to fall into a ditch on a snowy, rainy day, the tow truck will screw in the hook and pull you out.

The holes are there usually only on the cars built out of the country. The Towing eyelet screws into the hole, and this is what they use to fasten the cars down when they come to america on the big boats.

OR.....you can buy a license plate holder and place it in the tow hook (adapter) to give it an offset look if you rather not drill and mount one in the middle.
